Nokia HSDPA support in Mac OS X 10.5

My Nokia N95-3 has a deliciously fast HSDPA connection, and it is automatically recognized in Mac OS X 10.5 for syncing and tethering. Only one slight problem:

Using the developer tools and iSync Plugin Maker.app, I was able to update Barkman’s script to work in Leopard. My preliminary tests are getting ~750kbps in my apartment with so-so signal reception from AT&T. Woo! (Now if only Nokia would make a QWERTY version, so I didn’t have to carry around both this and a Blackberry…)

You can grab my updated modem script here: NokiaHSDPA.zip

Just dump it in /Library/Modem Scripts and then follow one of the many existing setup guides for either bluetooth or USB tethering, making sure to select the new HSDPA device instead of the 3G device from the Nokia category.

Hello and thank yo for this post; I have a MBP and N-95 8Gb and have been looking for a etter script to take advantage of the 3.5g speeds. This scripts works though I’m still not seeing an increase in speed from the 300kps speed from the standard osx script. Crying shame!!

    Hey,

i have noticed that this script doesn’t work for nokia e series devices namely the E71 i have tested it against. It turns out that the PC suit software, if you are using a WinXP box issues an additional AT command to the phone (+CGATT=0;). You can see this in the operators.xml file in the PC suite install directory.

My problem is i cannot work out how to put the AT command in the script! Do you have any suggestions. Drop me an email (maxxim@gmail.com)

I have a Mac OS X. I’m trying to use Blue tooth to connect to the internet via my Nokia 6062 (3G). I get a message that says no carrier detected. Does that mean I need a different SIM card? I have an Etisalat sim card in the phone now. I bought it through an interpreter that doesn’t understand what I’m trying to do.

Works great to connect my iMac G5 to my Nokia E71 via USB in PC Suite mode, using the Tango HSDPA network in Luxembourg. Only problem is that I have lost a connection involuntarily after several minutes – didn’t catch the error message – will update when it happens again. Now to make it work via Bluetooth – settings hell.

Hi – okay, after 40 minutes, the connection disconnected. Error was “The connection was terminated by the remote site”, reported by Internet Connect. Interestingly, in my Console – I found the following error message at the same time as the disconnection – “23/03/09 11:04:26 AM pppd[13726] IPV6CP: timeout sending Config-Requests”. I read somewhere that you have do disable IPV6 to make Bluetooth connections stable. Is it possible the same applies to USB connections? Anyone?

It works with my e71… only pulling 384kb though, where with my data card I know I can get around 1.5Mbit here.

Will test it in a few other places as well.

May I ask what I’m doing wrong? I’ve got my E71 working with iSync AND as modem on my OSX Tiger but I’ve recently purchased an iMac running Leopard and I followed the above instructions and it’s just staying on “Connecting” but never actually connecting.

I’m not sure but I put the Telephone # as *99# and put the APN as 3services as I’m with 3Mobile Australia.
