"generally, i believe he's correct.

this ignores, hoowever, predatory real estate moves when starbucks is looking for sites.  neighboring businesses may do better as the idea of coffee permeates a neighborhood, but that's cold comfort for the mom and pop who lose their lease because starbucks offered way more money for the spot. in some cases, the deals fall through and starbucks locates elsewhere, but the mom and pop is driven out of business or relocates. this happened to the roastery in mill valley, ca."
